  • Motown's Mistake!

Gladys Knight has said that Motown and Berry Gordy just didn't do right by them, despite their great version of I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE, which of course would then lead to the release of Marvin Gaye's version of the same song which was sitting on the shelf, Gordy was too interested in Diana Ross and the you know whos. So, by the time they were finally allowed to record the wonderful NEITHER ONE OF US and DADDY COULD SWEAR.....they were out the door. They signed with Budda records and created one of the greatest R&B albums ever put on vinyl: IMAGINATION. Every cut was a classic, if not a bonified #1 Hit! This is their Masterpiece. MIDNIGHT TRAIN, I'VE GOT TO USE MY IMAGINATION, WHERE PEACEFUL WATERS FLOW, YOU'RE THE BEST THING.... An incredible album, that prepared the way for many other hits. A well deserved gem for them. It was no wonder they refused to show up for Motown 25!!

This was the first album on the Buddah label for Gladys & the Pips and it is stellar. This is them at the height of their powers. Sweet Seventies Soul worthy of the R&R Hall of Fame!
