Hauntingly Beautiful

This album, a tone poem really, uses elements of Indian Classical music and jazz to tell the story of a group of refugees in 1914 trying to go from India to Canada, and then having to return to India again to face violence and imprisonment. Dhillon's original compositions and arrangements of traditional melodies seek to capture the hope, determination, and despair experienced by the over 300 passengers of the Komagata Maru. Throughout, the music is haunting and evocative. Emotions are laid bare and at the same time nuanced.
The musicianship is first rate. The quartet's playing is very tight. And the leader shows his considerable skills on alto sax, bansuri, and tabla. For those who enjoy jazz fusion, this album is a treat. Highly recommended.
