  • The Honest Review

I absolutely love Cheno, and I have even gone to Bible College with him. In writing this review, I wanted to make sure that I was giving him the best props, but also while being honest. I've listened to album over 5 times now and have had difficulty rating it since I have many mixed feelings about it. Is it great? I don't think it is. Is it terrible? Absolutely not! So what causes these mixed feelings? First of all, I was totally astounded and elated with "Home." I honestly think that the album is a masterpiece. It's so dynamic, and instantly replayable. With "Lunar," I found myself really trying to dig and understand the theme behind his album. I did catch a much more mellow undertone, with soft melodies and quasi-muted keys. It has the aspiration to be "spacey," with a futuristic soul founded in poorly produced songs. Don't get me wrong, it comes across if you are searching for it! Nevertheless, it is difficult to find and is missing in almost half the songs. This leads me to my biggest problem with "Lunar." It is poorly produced. The songs are not entirely dynamic, in fact most of them are easily forgotten or even skipped. The album has terrible flow; a lot of these songs need to be reorganized! I just feel like the title "Lunar" is where the most love went to, while the entire album was done just to be done. Track 13 "Cobang" ends abruptly, and I am almost certain not on purpose; it just sounds terrible and disappointing! The reason I don't give "Lunar" one star is because I believe it at least hits a mediocre standard within the music industry. Another reason I give it 3 stars is because I can see the evolution in Cheno's style. Normally bands or artists stay stagnant for 4-5 albums before they realize they are basically playing the same songs over and over again but with just slightly different lyrics. I applaud Cheno for evolving in his style, and if it was done at least a little better I would have given it 4 maybe even 5 stars. As it stands, "Lunar" is much appreciated and satisfies that Cheno itch, but disappoints on a quality level. Again, I am a fan and I love his earlier work. This is just not what I was expecting...maybe "Home" was so good that everything seems to pale in comparison! I don't know, but regardless I still play the album, even if it's not a masterpiece!

When people think of Christian hip-hop or rap albums, the usual response is that album is weak, cheesy, corny, whack, soft, or not good. Well this album is none of those. I will be playing this in my gym with a bunch of power lifters. Get it now.

I've been listening to Cheno since his first mixtape Da Take Back. From that to Home and now Lunar all I can say is that this album is at another level. Coming hardcore as usual and strong with his lyrics the album has various mix of songs making it whole and missing nothing!! People trust me, this is good music coming from the city!!!
