  • A Beautiful Haunting Voice.

I've love Emmylou since I first stumbled onto this album in a record store in Kansas City of all places. Coat Of Many Colors was playing,I and remember asking the clerk who is that singing? He said it's a new singer by the name of Emmylou Harris. Well I decided to buy the album even though I'd only heard the one song, and I'm glad I did. Her pure voice brings added pathos to Coat of Many Colors and especially to Boulder To Birmingham . Hearing either one always brings a tear to my eyes. A great album by a great artist.

Everything on this album is done well. It has a good balance too! Moods shift around on the listener. From the rollicking opener to the sad laments, Emmylou puts your heart on a cyclone of emotions. She co-worte "Boulder To Birmingham" and it shines alongside the many wonderful covers. The arrangements suit her voice and style perfectly. This is well worth buying the whole package.

This is the album to buy to begin your Emmylou Harris collection. The song choices are excellent and the production is perfect (crisper and more direct than that on "Luxury Liner", in my opinion). You get all that you would expect from Emmylou: heartbreaking, sighing vocals, perfect phrasing, and the amazing craft of her backing band. This album will make you a lifelong fan, and will be the first of many Emmylou albums you will want to own. If you've ever had a broken heart, just try to get through "Too Far Gone" without choking up...
