Reviews

  • Ambient Chillwave

Upon first listen of The Slideshow Effect by Memoryhouse you will immediately take notice of two not-so-subtle generalizations: -- They have an incredible knack for making each instrument sound like a heartbeat. -- Every chord on this album resembles life's initial breath. Having listened in full, if you walk away with that same feeling, consider yourself in the majority. For proof, the last 90-seconds of the song Heirloom is all you need. If there is indeed a mystical breath of life, then in the diffused, ambient world of chill wave, Heirloom is it. At times, Memoryhouse can get a bit maudlin; this is a debut full-length after all and it is an ambient record, but songs like Walk With Me and The Kids Were Wrong help self-contain that oozing emotion. Others, like Punctum and Heirloom for instance, enhance that ambiance. --- Michael Canter - Jivewired

I don't really write reviews, but I've been listening to Memoryhouse for a while and I can't stop listening. I was really excited about their earlier work, and I completely fell in love with this album. I really enjoy how their music has progressed, from the underwater echoes to more upbeat and crisper tracks. If you really liked Memoryhouse's past albums, this album will definitely not disappoint.

I'm very in love with their EP, and so naturally this was on preorder. It's a very different sound than I expected, a little more pop and a little less dreamy. I wasn't a huge fan at first, but after giving it a few spins I'm really quite impressed and in love with this album. I do like their EP more, so if you're considering this band, start with the EP.. but this album doesn't disappoint either. I also really like this band because of their overall sincerity. I saw them in Salt Lake City on their kickoff tour for the album, and was able to talk to Denise and Evan. Really down to earth polite people. No sense of arrogance at all! They sounded fantastic live, which is a talent some bands/singers seem to lack these days. They took time out to talk to me and my friends, and being a big fan, it was a real treat. Get both the albums, as well as some of the electronic stuff Evan has done. I really like these guys and hope they keep putting out good music.

This is quite the impressive first full-length album by one of the best up and coming bands around in Memoryhouse. Sub Pop just continues to stockpile great artists like these guys. The record plays like the soundtrack to a slow motion daydream. You just sort of lose track of time as you sit there, headphones on, listening to the calming, chilled out music. It's not for everyone, which is a shame. I read in a review of the new Sleigh Bells album that the people who don't understand aren't bad people, they just need to be sort of guided into it. That's sort of what I feel about Memoryhouse. I would definitely encourage people to listen to it, and if something like this isn't what you normally would listen to, take a chance. The $8 price isn't expensive at all, and if you listen to the whole thing, you might find that you surprise yourself. Step out of the comfort zone, support a great label, and fall in love with the feedback drenched chilled out wave that is Memoryhouse.
