Listeners may have been introduced to David J. Roch, as I was, through the use of his song "Skin & Bones" on the 2011 season of So You Think You Can Dance. This single of his is gorgeous, and the rest of the album does not disappoint. Currently it is only available through iTunes or as an "import", which is unfortunate in some ways because it means it is not available at most brick-and-mortar cd stores. Nonetheless, his sound is worth the effort: thoughtfully orchestrated and produced, with smooth musicianship that complements his evocative, flexible voice and allows it to take center stage. Roch sounds a bit like David Gray, with a grittiness that is complemented by a smooth falsetto. Some songs are produced sparely, while others make use of strings, horns, organ, and rich percussion. All of the songs have a bit of melancholy to them, which indie listeners will likely appreciate. A new favorite who deserves more exposure.
