Listening to Gretchen play on this album is like watching a master artist create a masterpiece! Only a lot more pleasurable, and a fun treat for your ears! She is an astonishing guitar player, brilliant composer and has phenomenal musicianship as an artist. Hale Souls is a brilliantly written masterpiece. It has diversity that is unmatched and untouched by anyone I've ever heard! You can definitely hear her classical music background in this release, with a hint of the blues mixed in. All the greats like Yngwie Malmsteen and Joe Satriani have the licks of classical music in their sound just like Gretchen. I am a metal fan at heart, Hale Souls has a hard rock/metal sound to it with tracks Scrap Metal, Oleo Strut , Valentino's Victory Lap, Captured Barricade and Struck Sleepless. Is It Not Strange is an acoustic track with a heavy classical music sound that is superiorly done. Fast Crowd is an aggressive all acoustic brilliancy backed by Jude Gold. Deja Vu is a great mix of the electric guitar with shredding distortion and non. I love the violins in Walking Shadow, Fading and at the end of Struck Sleepless performed by Emily Palen. Do yourself and your ears a favor and get this album. Then do yourself more of a favor and get her other project albums from Stick And Stones and Lapdance Armageddon. I promise you won't be disappointed.

This album demonstrates and documents that Gretchen Menn is not only an incredible guitar player, but also an amazing composer...her versatility and mastery could easily inspire envy if they didn't more first and (more strongly) inspire awe. This album is absolutely wonderful!!!

Rock need more women who aren't just sex appeal. Gretchen is talented, there's no denying it. Her music has heavy Latino accents which makes it all the more interesting. Deja Vu and Oleo Strut are amazing.

I discovered Gretchen about a year ago through the DiMarzio website and was totally blown away by her killer chops. That led me to search for her and that's how I found her Led Zeppelin tribute group, Zepparella. I found the video for Valentino's Victory Lap a while back and found out that she was working on a full length solo album and the anticipation began. She's very much cut from the same cloth as Steve Morse, not surprising since he's one of her heroes, and it's a compliment to be sure. She's not afraid to rock it out, but she's also more than willing to go exploring through jazz and world music territory. The fact that she's an amazingly gorgeous woman should not cloud your senses on her music. She's got the skills and she brings them to the game. Check her out.
