No one can top Tom Waits. Stick to the real thing, he never disappoints.

If Tom Waits was dead he'd be rolling over in his grave. Some of these are such bad covers of the original that they remind me of a Richard Cheese "Lounge Against the Machine" style farce, but there is nothing amusing here. "Broken Bicycles" and "Old Boy Friends" are embarrassingly bad. I have heard wonderful covers of his songs, but they are not in this collection.

while i really love the work of many of the artists on this album on their own, I don't really understand why they decided to do these covers. They don't keep in the vain of the originals, which I have absolutely grown to love. The only way I can see someone purchasing this album is if they don't know Tom Waits... it would be a nice way to introduce them to his songwriting. However, for die hard Waits fans like myself, it is a bit disheartening to see some of my favorite artists cover some of my favorite songs... and for me not to enjoy them. But to each his own, I guess. Listen to a sample of each of these tracks before u purchase. Definitely.

if you're gonna buy one of the waits tribute albums here on itunes, this oughta be the one, and its really not a tough decision. this is an incredible album from start to finish. whenever you talk about tom waits fans there seems to be this idea of people liking the early, heart of saturday night stuff as opposed to the later, more "experimental" stuff. in my opinion, this might be more appealling to fans of the later work and the other album for fans of the earlier stuff, but that's just me. not that this has ANY bearing on waits' work, but i think the other album is too tame and uninspired. this is the real deal holyfield right here.
