I just saw these guys live for the 1st time this past weekend and they were great! I downloaded the album and I'm not disappointed in the least. Their version of Creep is haunting. Their sound isn't something you hear every day, and it's way underrated.

First time I heard these guys perform live, I was blown away. They have a genuine gift for writing quality music that is not only catchy, but also uniquely beautiful and lyrically memorable. This album captures perfectly how good I'm Not A Pilot truly is, and I highly recommend it to anybody who is unfamiliar with their work. You won't be disappointed. Lets help spread the word and make this band gain the national respect it deserves.

  • Solid and Engaging: This isn't your average pop/rock music

This is one of the most original bands to come out of Milwaukee in a long time. Their original music is fantastic, polished and nuanced. Not only are the pop hooks extremely well written, the cello draws me in deeper with classical flourishes that expose the soul of I'm Not A Pilot. This isn't your average pop/rock quartet. The production on the album is solid. Everything is clear and driving when it needs to be and delicate when the music needs to be reserved. Having a classically trained cellist who performs with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra doesn't hurt, and the cello really shines in the orchestrated ensemble sections making those parts a real treat to listen to. But the story of this band is more than just their cellist with the rest of the group bringing as much to the table. Leading the group is a competent pianist and songwriter who's voice really shines here over their previous release. The percussion and bass drop some really nice grooves. The title track, Need Money For Rocket Fuel, is probably the best ensemble track on the album. It goes everywhere the band wants to take you, opening with a contemplative piano riff and segwaying into a completely awesome driving second half. Everyone gets their moment to shine, and shine they do.

I've been following these guys since it was just the one guy on a keyboard, around three years ago. As they've evolved, they've become even more brilliant. Their EP was and still is one of my favorite albums. This CD is sort of hit-and-miss, however. While their covers of "Creep" and "Where Is My Mind?" are great, some of the music is forgettable in other songs. Ami's Song is incredible. I plan on using it in a film soon. It was a great first effort, but with the talent these guys have, they shouldn't have to settle for a few "incredible" songs and a few "we need to put more songs on this CD" songs.

So world, these guys can play. They do well to pull of the symphonic/alternative blend, which not many can. So, if you are looking to listen to some good music, give this a listen! Go Milwaukee music!
