Reviews

  • Different but as usual haunting lyrical conten

I have always been a wallflowers(j dylan) fan and really enjoyed jacob's last solo album. this album was a bit of a miss for myself although many of the lyrics were as enthralling and contemplative as usual.. honestly, i wish this album sounded a little more gritty and had less production on it.. recently i have been listening to a lot of blues and perhaps seasick steve, or the likes of william elliot whitmore have skewed my view of southern blues/county sounds.. none the less the album was enjoyable but only when your mentally set in the right position... i think many of you may be surprised by this album because as usual he manages to inspire you while carrying you thru darker days... and it is always good to hear artists change things up and flex a little muscle.. Keep it up jacob dylan i may not have totally loved this album but still look forward to your next...

This is honestly the best album that has come out in my lifetime! Jakob, Neko, and Kelly sound beautiful together and I love T-Bone's production. "Holy Rollers for Love" is my favorite song on the album.
  • Great Album, Horrible Production

I totally agree with the other reviewers about the production quality of this record. In contrast to Jakob's last album (produced by Rick Rubin) which was a sparse and beautiful lesson in sonic simplicity, this album is almost destroyed by the producer. I mean, I like boomy bass and ambient reverb (long-time fan of dub reggae), but somebody went way overboard on this record. Sony, do all of us J D fans a favor and send the master tapes (or the hard drive) over to Rick and see if he can salvage the hack mixing job on this record. These songs and performances deserve far better than the treatment they received here. 5 stars for performances and songs, 0 stars for production.
  • Dylan great as usual, but I miss the Wallflowers!!

I definitely agree with 'wambam'- the bass on this album is seriously obnoxious! I can't believe they were hyping the production of this album; I honestly find it hard to listen to. The content on the other hand is great- JD does no wrong, and I expected nothing less from him. I do believe that his work with the Wallflowers is superior however, and hope he returns to that alt-rock style soon.

This is one of the most authentic albums I have listened to. I was unsure that Jakob could ever compare to his famous father; this album demonstrates Jakob's profound lyrical ability and authentic presentation.
  • I little too much low end but amazing songs

Glad to see both Ray LaMontagne's and Tom Waits musicians playing together. I wish Tom Waits would make a new album in this style. It seems like having T-Bone produce your album is what everyone's doing these days ad nauseum. An amazing album none the less.

I’ve been a fan of jakob dylan’s work since his band “The Wallflowers” put out the album “red letter days”. His voice is almost identical to that of his fathers. However he brings new meaning to alternative country/indie folk. His atmospheric arrangements and “in the middle of nowhere” sound to his music, bring out the deepest and absolute best parts of dylan’s personality. His lyrics are both meaningful and true to the heart. The instrumentations on each song, have their own melancholy/great outlook on life. Which makes this an excellent record to play from start to finish. You know an album is perfect when you don’t skip a single track.
  • Just O.K

I like Jakob Dylan and I love Neko Case, but I really feel like this album is too held back. Have you heard Neko sing? The girl has an amazing voice and they simply used her for one note backround vocals. The album is O.K. It's soothing, and has some good songs, but I definitley feel like some talent was wasted. Had they let the vocalists ( all of them) do their thing this album could have had a lot more power.
