  • So bad

Ok so I gave this band a listen and I can't help but think that if Jack White's name weren't tied to them, all these 4 and 5 star reviews would be suspiciously absent. So, so, so, SO bad. The singer cannot sing. Period. Is she even trying? There is a notable lack of passion to their music. They sound like bored high school kids who decided to start a band just to kill the time. This is god awful. I feel like I must be listening to something different from what everyone else is hearing because I don't get it. At all. I guess hype and a big name throwing their weight behind you goes a long way these days. Because I can't even come close to recommending these girls. What a shame.

I honestly thought they were trying too hard to sound like the White Srtipes. I thought they were good with Stephen Colbert though.

I checked this out after watching Jack White on The Colbert Report last week. (Colbert Bump!) The Belles are creepy bluesy and spooky groovy! Big and raw, this record is chock full of jammin' gothic blues goodness, or darkness, as it were.

I would have never known about this band if it wasn't for Jack While showing them on the Colbert Report. This was the best marketing move I've ever seen, because I'm hooked. The sound of the Black Belles is the combination of several familar genres, but the whole is more than the sum of its parts here. The combination works well, and there is enough of a raw unrefined sound that helps give it a garage/punk vibe. This all may be manufactured, but it works in my opinion. And if it is, well done. Please do more of it Jack. I can't wait to buy an album. For the people suggesting this band is too rough, and doesnt have it yet; listen to the early days of punk. What made that music work and appeal to people had nothing to do with the quality of their playing or singing. It was the emotion and mindset their music conveyed. If the Belles are actually able to make a few ablums and stick around I see them evolving into a remarkable band.
  • Nice Surprise

The image that The Black Belles present in their photos does not fit the music here, but that wasn't such a bad surprise. It reminds me of early B-52's, and the guitar work is good for such a young band. From these tracks, I prefer Lies; it has the right quirky-cool sound you might hear on a Quentin Tarantino movie soundtrack.

I'm really glad the Black Belles were featured on the Report. I don't think I'd have found them otherwise, and I love their sound!
  • Thanks to Colbert for introduction to these girls!

I am a medium Colbert fan, and while his song is funny, it's not one I'd buy really, but I very much like The Black Belles! Alot of the critical views I sort of see their points, but The Black Belles remind me of 50's and 60's rock like The Shangri-Las and such, and that's a good thing. They aren't anything like most modern rock music, they are a bit different, unpolished. I can't wait to hear more from them!
