The Tropic Rot (Deluxe Edition)

After experimenting with they're sound in Versions, Poison the Well came back and honed in what they liked from experimenting and combined it with the heaviness they are known for and then added in the feel of eeriness and haunting of paradise gone wrong or "rotted" away. The Tropic Rot, in my opinion, is their best album (which is clearly a controversial statement!) and will definitely hold up as time goes on. However, The Tropic Rot isn't the most accessible album by Poison the Well and should definitely be considered a "grower". To older fans, it could be a little tough, like Versions, to get into and appreciate. However, after a couple listens all the way through it really sets its teeth in. One of the things I really like about this album is the moods, feelings, and auras that are created by the different songs. The instrumentation is really, really well done with awesome guitar tones that are very heavy, yet not metal (think Vheissu from Thrice). There is a lot of space in the guitar work and even in the drumming, allowing the songs to really flex and groove. Some songs even feature tones from the guitars that almost sound like they'd be featured in a 60's surf album (especially in Cinema). The vocals are immensely varied with harsh screams we've come to expect from Jeff but with melodies that are not poppy or necessarily mainstream, but after a few listens sink in and get stuck in your head anyway, in the best possible way (especially in Pamplemousse). In my opinion, The Tropic Rot has a little for everyone in it. Typical heavy jams to get you head banging or start the circle pit (Exist Underground, Sparks It Will Rain, Cinema, Who Doesn't Love a Good Dismemberment, Celebrate the Pyre, Makeshift Clay You) you'd expect to hear from Poison the Well along with epic builders (Antarctica Inside Me, Are You Anywhere, Without You and One Other I Am Nothing) to softer, but by no means boring jams (Pamplemousse, When You Lose I Lose As Well). Poison the Well has never been afraid to push boundaries and do what they want to do regardless of the consequences (both financial and fan wise) making music that is sincere that they believe in. (They were dropped from Atlantic Records because Atlantic Records didn't like what would become Versions). In keeping true to themselves, they released an epic masterpiece that I listen to constantly.
