If you're beginning your GBV journey don't land on this entry---it will spoil your experience! It very well may be the greatest of all GBV LPs! You'll need to start with the "Classic" lineup era, but when you move on to the Doug Gillard guitar centric group, "Collapse" is the sweet spot. Massive credit has to go to Ric Ocasek---and it's not a "slick" production: it is a CLARITY of sound! The guitars sound as if they are pulling you into the speaker cabinets...keyboards be damned. When you pair this sound with Uncle Bobs' anthemic song writing...instant nirvana. As always dear traveller--TURN IT UP

In my mind, this is one of GBV's most underrated albums. People don't seem to hear past the glossy production by Ric Ocasek and overlook the songs themselves. Many of Bob's finest are here: "Things That I Will Keep", whether consciously or not, to me is an instruction manual on how to listen to GBV. It's all about unlocking the hooks. "Surgical Focus", "Wrecking Now", and "Much Better Mr Buckles" are also GBV anthems. A couple of songs are slightly subpar ("In Stitches", "Dragons Awake") but they still work in the context of the album. Bob Pollard might be the greatest songwriter of all time. There is no question that he has written more great songs than anybody else. I guarantee he's written at least 200 absolute classics, maybe more.

Much has been said about Guided By Voices and their evolution from basement recording visionaries to popular alt-rock favorites; but all that critical discussion aside, Do the Collapse delivers some classic GBV sounds delivered with a more focused attention to intention. Where earlier discs charm listeners with their genius melding of tossed off pop hooks with streams of imagery; this disc channels the creativity into 16 pinpoint inventions. Songs sound fresh and not overproduced. Kicking things off with Teenage FBI, GBV add another oddball opus to their catalogue. An interesting listen full of fun and wonder.
