Jim Suhler and Monkey Beat are an amazingly talented, high energy band and this is Texas blues at it's very best. Jim's guitar is incredible and the songwriting is fantastic. The title track, "Po' Lightnin'" & "Mexicali Run" are among my favorites. Heck, they even toss in a killer version of AC/DC's "Up To My Neck In You"! Buy this and go buy the rest. Jim Suhler and Monkey Beat won't let you down.

This is the band's best effort to date in my opinion. Great guitar playing throughout and more flavors than just retro ZZ Top. JS&MB are one of my favorite bands at the moment. Don't try to cherry-pick songs from this album cause there's too many notable tracks. The Rory Gallagher cover, "I Could've Had Religion" and the title track are great songs, but it's "Drunken Hearted Boy" and especially "Deep Water Lullaby" that stand out. The latter includes some righteous playing by Joe Bonamassa.
  • Texas Roadhouse at it's best!

This is a great album by one of great guitar players from the great state of Texas. Jim Suhler really shines as a singer/songwriter and guitarslinger. This is a highly recommended must have CD!!

This album took forever to finally get released. The wait was worth it. A 16-song package with lots of good guitar work. A lot of ZZ Top influence heard in both songwriting and licks. Jim's solos are tasty, not flashy. Joe Bonamassa's guitar work on Deep Water Lullaby is on the money. Good stuff.
