Rarely do I stumble upon a band that makes me want to simultaneously giggle uncontrollably and headbang until my neck gives way. This band's music is truly a "sum of its parts" kind of deal: no one riff, section of a song, or drum fill is going to be considered "best ever", but on the whole, this album is absolutely phenomenal. Burst has achieved a sound on this record that could actually qualify as "unique", which in today's multimedia environment is almost impossible. What does it sound like? Well, Burst sounds like Burst. It's like Isis and Dillinger Escape Plan in the sense that you always will use them to describe other bands, but have difficulty putting a finger on exactly what they are. Which ultimately is the strongest compliment you can pay to a musical outfit - it's unlike anything else out there. Granted, you have to be a fan of the progressive metalcore/art metal scene to appreciate this band, but this band will definitely be inspiring serious metal musicians for generations to come.
  • One of the best of '08

This is probably the best rock album of 2008. The more you listen to it, the better it gets. I'm incredibly saddened by Burst's impending breakup. Please buy this to show them your appreciation.
  • This band is still ahead of its time.

In 2006 Origo was ahead of its time, two years later the rest of the pack is still trying to catch up; but now they all sound like Isis. Here in '08 Burst returns with Lazarus Bird - every bit as forward thinking now as Origo was then - leading the herd on another two year game of cat and mouse that no doubt will end in the imitators doing what imitators do best: imitating. Burst are innovators; and they've only taken two albums to prove it. If you really want to be impressed - to the point of no return - this is the album that will do it.
  • Complex, creative and incredible! Burst does it again!

Metal continues to provide the newest and most interesting music today. While the other genres out there generate the same basic sound with the same basic formula, Metal is constantly expanding shifting and changing. Bands like Burst explore the genre to create something fascinating and exciting. "Lazarus Bird" is nothing short of amazing. The complex musical structure combines elements from across the rock genre. Math rock, space rock, prog rock and pure metal combine to create a wholly unique musical experience. To call this progressive is really a mistake. This is pure metal glory but with an approach that is intelligent and articulate. Each song on this album is carefully crafted using a variety of elements to create one of the most unique soundscapes in music. While it certainly has soft musical interludes and moments of post-rock escapism, this retains the power and force that is true metal joy. Kids, bang your head while using it! Burst has created a master work and built upon their impressive catalogue. Fans of Between the Buried and Me or Meshuggah should enjoy this. However, if you got an open mind and really want to rock, buy this!
