Sam Amidon has one of the most unique voices I heard in a really long time, both in it's sound and what it has to say. With melodies sweet and simple and lyrics to match Sam weaves tales that I find my self picturing on my head each time I listen to the album.

I also saw Sam Amidon, Nico Muhly, and Doveman. Ir was a wonderful show. Sam Amidon was the standout for me as well. His version of "Little Johnny Brown" was exquisitely chilling!

In a river of indy rock, classical orchestrations, and folk-roller emotions, a silver spoon rests above the silt and is slightly tarnished by all three. Sam fishes it out, then feed us honey.

One of my favorite live shows this past year featured Sam Amidon, Doveman, and Nico Muhly. Three truly unique artists, but it was Mr. Amidon who was the revelation for me. This cd is deserving of a much wider audience.

This album is a good departure from Doveman for Sam. The lyrics are loosely taken from old Western jingles, proverbs, and stories and beautifully reinterpreted and collaged. If you are a fan of Bon Iver, Phosphorescent, or just great calm folk music...you will most definatedly love this. SARO, O DEATH, and WILD BILL JONES are my personal favorites.
  • Simplicity Works Best

At a first glance, simple. Yet when you listen further, you appreciate the subtlety of his Sam's voice. And then you realize that the music is an intricate pattern, woven together to complement the simple lines and vocals. Really the variety of instruments used are most creative and varied, which makes this a very enjoyable and relaxing album to listen to. An excellent and highly suggested artist and album in my book. Favorite songs? Saro, Sugar baby, and O Death.
