I'm Going Back There Someday

In response to the reviews souring disappointed because "this is not the Paul Williams" they remember, I'd like to ask the following: which Paul Williams do you remember. Paul has always been a great songwriter, but he hardly ever was a Frank Sinatra when it comes to performance. This is a recording by a man who "went to hell and back". Sure, he sounds older. So what? The songs are still great. Do we want aesthetic perfection or do we want heartfelt performances? I'll go with the latter any time. Warren Zevon's last album was fraught with all the pain he was going through and the vocals were weak, but it still was a great album. I'm glad Paul is still performing and that his songs are still going strong, as I strongly believe he was a master at a craft that has all but disappeared.

I grew up appreciating his music in the 70's, and though his voice was satisfactory for his songs, it is not up to a recording artist anymore. So sad as our memories get older. Makes you appreciate Shirley Bassey at 71 during the Oscars.

Paul Williams is a terrific song writer and am so glad he's in recovery. Great work on all sides Paul, glad to have you back!

No one sings a song better than the person who wrote it. Forget the orchestration, special effects, auto tune, big name - only the composer delivers the true meaning of the words and melody, regardless of the quality or age of their voice.

I grew up on Paul Williams. I grew up in the time of the singer / songwriter. This album and the pbs video are fantastic. The guest artists add a lot to the tunes, in just the right ways. Mr. Williams, you look and sound terrific. Thanks for giving so much of yourself to us over all these years. Awesome that ASCAP has such a terrific president now. Great to hear your voice again. I first fell in love with his songs when I was a teenager. His writing has always been beautiful. This is not the Paul Williams I have known. His voice has grown older. It isn't as smooth as it once was. I think the new songs are nice, but I would not buy this album. I prefer to remember Paul the way he was.

Hey iTunes! When you give a biography from an album page do try to get the right person. I'll give the album 3 stars and iTunes 1 for sloppy work.

Paul's voice was so distinctive in the 70's, but on this much later album, it's weak, fragile, and a little shaky. The 4-5 star reviewers here are waxing on about past vocal glory, but if someone played this without telling me who it was, I would have said it was someone's grandpa on karaoke night at a senior center. Yeah, I know he's much older and the voice has faded a bit, but I can't see myself buying this. Where is his early stuff?

Great to finally hear from this guy...been a long time. Like to find "Waking Up Alone" and the album that came from (70s?).

I became a fan with "Here Comes Inspiration" back in the 70s. I'd love to be able to get that one - hint, hint- if the powers to be at ITunes could accomplish it. Some of the songs from that old album are revised for this one and sound great - just like they always did. It would be good to hear some of the other old ones too.
