  • Old Recording for a revered master

I have two recordings of this monumental work of Back. I purchased this particular item intending as an upgrade for acoustics as I saw the release time is 2007, since my previous recordings do not sound great. To my profound disappoint, I found that this is actually a digitally re-mastering of some old recording upon listening. That, unfortunately, defeated the purpose of the acquisition. The performance is sterling. But if you are some one seeking great dynamic sound, this recording is not your choice.

This is the recording I knew and loved back in the 1960s, when I stole it from my brother's collection and wore it out — never understood why it fell through the digital cracks, and never heard better (except possibly Robert Shaw live, just before his death, in Carnegie Hall), despite decades of searching. Check out the Christe Eleison sample. Some of the sound quality seems a bit off on some other tracks, but maybe it always was. The fire burned through the vinyl scratches, and it burns through this remastering too.

Tahra's sound equipment dis-serves the performance. Archiv's Gardner or Richter conducted performances have the benefit of superior recording -- unusual for the Archiv label.
