  • America’s answer to Small Faces

Have always been a Big Star fan, but only now listened to this. Completely different from Big Star, which was guitar not brass driven. Now I hear it, Alex Chilton must have heard Stevie Marriot of the Small Faces. Blue eyed soul indeed. Brilliant

Alex Chilton charms young listeners as he delivers a classic vocal track that would set the way for future performances with Big Star. The vocals are tinged with the kind of urgency that convinces the listener of his sincerity in this classic rendition. Adam Duritz, who befriended Chilton in the ___s, said that Alex "sang rock & roll songs with … stark honesty & vulnerability ", which is probably the reason that he was hoping to sing and record on the Counting Crows' version of "The Ballad Of El Goodo"… Make sure to check out "Don't Lie To Me" and "When My Baby's Beside Me" from the album entitled: _#1 Record_ by Big Star, easily the two catchiest songs on the album with irresistible hooks and defiant lyrics, while simultaneously maintaining the same sincere expressions of love, desire, satisfaction… well, be the judge for yourself! Also, you may have heard a cover of "In The Street" from the same album on the TV Smash: "That 70s Show" from the turn of the century! (You remember, right? During the credits… it's the theme they all sing along to while driving Red's car. All these songs are available on iTunes! What are you waiting for?

Nothing brings back fond memories like old music, and the Box Tops take me back to my early teens, no worries and thanking God that I wasn't in Viet Nam! Get The Letter of course, but Soul Deep and Cry Like A Baby were just as great!!
  • If you like the Rascals, you will love Alex Chilton!

Anyone who thinks this band is a one-hit wonder cannot count. I know, I know. The Letter. But if you listen to this album and don't find a new musical hero in Alex Chilton, then I will kill myself. Go ahead. I dare you. This is life and death.
  • The Box Tops -1960's manna

With the recent passing of Alex Chilton, it brought to mind songs that are permanently etched in my brain...Cry Like a Baby and The Letter take me back to West Market Street in Philadelphia, with the sun filtering through the El tracks...there is nothing that will ever replace the sounds of 1960's AM radio and this stuff is the mother lode.
