A great Maynard Ferguson anthology!

No trumpet player will match the energy, passion, inspiration, leadership, and sharing as Maynard did. Generations of trumpet players understand his unique gift and appreciate how he shared that gift with young musicians and awestruck audiences. Essentials is just a touch of that legacy. Worth the purchase, for you and any young trumpet player who may wonder of the "art of the possible."

The compilation is great. In 1986 I was in the 8th grade and played trumpet. I learned about the Spartans Drum and Bugle Corps in Vancouver, Washington. I joined and had a whole new world of music opened to me. That was when I heard a tape of Maynard for the first time. I was amazed! So I started buying tapes and cd's of his. I wasen't sure if I was going to continue trumpet into high school, but after my rookie year (1986) of drum corps and hearing more and more of Maynard, I was hooked. Playing music was no longer just fun to do. It became a passion to me. Playing music, listening to music, had a new meaning to me. And while I was in the Marines a friend of mine also played trumpet. So I joined him on his other trumpet and had lots of fun. He asked me about jazz, so I told him. Corporal Jason Brown was very good playing standard concert band music. I decided that since he didn't really know about jazz, or how to play it, when we left the church by our barracks one night I went to my room and gather up all of Maynards cd's that I had. I took them to Jason and gave them to him. I told him to keep them, Ill buy new ones. He listened to them and said he loved them. It was my joy to pass on Maynards music to someone that didn't know about jazz, just as my friend some 10-12 years earlier did when he gave me the tape of Maynard. I had a chance to go see Maynard in high school. It was my junior year, 1989, but unfortunately we had a winter storm hit us in Oregon and it was cancelled. That was ok though, because everytime I played one of his tapes I would just imagine being at his concert. Maynard's music did great things for me as a youngster, and I was happy I was able to pass that on to Jason. I know things like this happen all the time, I am just glad it happened to me, and I passed it on. His music will live forever. Pass it on, pay it forward, share the love, however you want to put it. Maynard, you were a huge inspiration to me and others, and you will always be. Thanks for the great music.

Bargain price for some classic Maynard charts. Highly recommend buying this album.

I think this album is great but where is theme from star trek and conquistador

I saw Maynard when I was in high School I am 45 now hated to hear he died but have enjoyed all heis music for years the energy he generates is unmatched. I have friends that say they hate jazz but love his universal style He was a great musician his music is awesome Thanks for having his albums I have looked to replace my old album collection for a whil glad you had some of his recordings here hope you decide to get more in Thanks Ron

Maynard Ferguson was and still is the most influential trumpet players of all time! His legacy didn't end with his passing. With this album, he lives on. I play trumpet, and have played Gonna Fly Now in my school's jazz band. I also figured out how to play parts of MacCarthur Park, Over the Rainbow and Birdland. This album is the definitive collection, and shows Maynard at his best.

If you love Maynard Ferguson, you might like to check out Carl Saunders, one of our most amazing trumpet-players, who has played with just about everyone, and has done a few of his own albums. He is incredible! Also, he is one of the musicians that most people don't know about, because he always championed the needs of the musician-artist against some of the music unions in LA and Nevada, at his own risk. He is an amazing "universal man" and a truly wonderful and versatile artist, having worked in all genres of music entertainment. You should hear his album-samples on this iTunes website.

If you play the trumpet like me you can appreciate how hard it would be to go that high, he is truly amazing. I think it might be a waste of money to pay all that money on one album. I suggest you buy "gonna fly now", "Birdland", and "Chameleon. Also try Dizzy Gillepsie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Duke Ellington
