    For Beethoven enthusiasts who seem to be exhausted by the symphonies, due to over-playing or otherwise, this is a great way to experience Beethoven's genius again, as if for the first time. Scherbakov's playing mimics the orchestra so well, and though there are some passages that the piano simply can't physically do justice to, there are many instances where you hear some sounds for the first time. Whether it be the flutes in the sixth, or a little motif played by the violins in the beginning of the ninth, the piano brings out details you don't always hear from an orchestral performance. These recordings are a great way to fall in love with Beethoven all over again.

    Scherbakov is the sort of pianist you don't see (hear) every day, as partially evidenced by the fact that, to my knowledge, this album contains several pieces of which I can find no other recordings. There could be any number of reasons that this is so, but I think it's very possible that the main reason is that some of these pieces are so challenging that 75% of all pianists haven't large enough hands to play it, and 95% of the 25% who do simply don't have the technique or patience necessary to learn such pieces. But that certainly doesn't apply here. Not only does Scherbakov get all the notes right, but he makes it sound easy. The sound coming from the piano isn't that of a normal piano; it's that of an orchestra. In the second movement of the Ninth Symphony, he takes the tempo slower than the piece is usually performed by orchestras (and for good reason - I doubt it's even possible to hit some of the rhythms at full speed), but the result sounds neither rushed nor slow. It comes out with an ease and fluency that makes you doubt whether or not you're hearing a single pianist. The dynamics move very nicely, too, which tells me another thing: With most pianists, you'd be hearing a fairly continuous dynamic; the sort that suggests that the pianist is only barely hanging on. Not so with Scherbakov: He plays with an awareness and coordination the likes of which I've heard from very few pianists - Horowitz, Rachmaninoff, Rubinstein, and, perhaps, Gershwin. If you're interested in the Liszt transcriptions of the Beethoven Symphonies, you aren't going to find many complete recordings. In fact, this may be the only one in existence. But trust me, you will not feel as if you're settling for whatever's available; this recording is top-notch, and I feel that I would still think that, were this recording only one of a thousand recordings of these pieces. A fabulous album, and well-worth the price.

    Great performance and recording. Scherbakov's playing is crisp and clean. A definite must for Beethoven enthusiasts.
