This is the best album of the 1980's by ANY artist. In a career of great music this recording is truly Dan's finest. After years of listening, this album it still blows me away. Dan was an extremely under- appreciated artist (although not to his true fans) and sadly was taken from us so young. As long as we have recordings like The Innocent Age he will continue to live on through his artistry and music. God bless and rest in peace.

I was introduced to Dan through my mom (She was actually the same age as I currently am (22) when this album came out in ‘81!) She would play it when I was a child, but with age, I have grown to appreciate it, not only for its nostalgic familiarity but for its craft as well. When I listen to music, I tend to care more about the lyrics than the tune (ex. Simon and Garfunkel). While I feel that Dan is talented in both areas, I feel that his lyrics are so exceptional that they deserve independent recognition. Not many possess that kind of gift, and I struggle to find even a fraction of that talent in music produced today. It’s a shame he is no longer with us and still creating such beautiful pieces, but at least his work will endure; I know I will play his music for my future children and maybe even their children.

I find myself haunted by this record. The recover cover of ragged Anne doll and grave...creepy. I went on Dan's website a few months before he died. I thanked for this great record. It is a masterpiece.

Although I have been listening to DF for years, I just discovered this CD today. Having been to The Reach on Hermit Island, one of the most amazing places on this earth, it is an emotional connection to listen to this song. I can't wait to go there again next summer. When I wiped away the tears, I jumped to purchase this CD. Ghosts is equally amazing. Thanks DF for your amazing contribution to music and art.

How can you wrap your brain around the profound impact this musician had/has on so many lives? This album, is a perfect example of the ethereal, otherworldly way Fogelberg was able to reach into your heart, and pluck every string that resonates in the human spirit. Love, birth, death, adventure, and the great mysteries of life are all examined with such lyrical and musical GENIUS, in this classic song cycle. Their is no one else who will ever come close in voice, emotion, musicianship and existentialist understanding of the human experience, like Dan Fogelberg. A MUST, for anyone who loves this artist. We miss you still.

I have this on vinyl and played it on Accuphase and McIntosh equipment. I thought it sounded wonderful. The tunes are are melodic and they almost pull you into the song. He had a way of provoking emotion very few singer/songwriters can do. What can I say, my wife and I love this album!!!

Such a wonderful group of songs, great music and lyrics that weave beautiful stories. As a sailer who has spent a lot of summers cruising the Maine coast "The Reach" paints a vivid picture of that place and mood, it always takes me back on board with the rail down and the rocky shore gliding by. This is a great album.

Releasing a 2-disc set is always a gutsy move, even for an established star like Fogelberg, but it turned out to be one of his best projects ever. I bought it on vinyl when it was released in 1981, and I was captivated right from the opening chords of "Nexus." Each song in its turn painted a fascinating picture in my mind, and I responded with rapt attention. I didn't even realize until years later that the songs formed an epic cycle, corresponding to the journey of life. That realization only served to enhance my appreciation for the singer and his extraordinary artistic vision. Standout tracks include "The Sand And the Foam", a sad but achingly beautiful ballad lamenting the transience of childhood; "Leader of the Band", a touching tribute to Dan's father; "Lost in the Sun", a surprising mix of anthem rock and thoughtful observation; a warm and transcendent duet with Emmylou Harris called "Only the Heart May Know"; a charming portrait of a New England fishing expedition (The Reach), and a nice handful of radio hits: "Hard to Say", Run for the Roses", "Same old Lang Syne". I'll admit that "empty Cages" and "Ghosts" are a little depressing for my tastes, but the rest of the album is magnificent. On the whole, it ranks as one of the masterpieces of 80's pop music.
