  • A Beautiful Departure From Their Own Greatness.

I was first turned on to Detachment Kit when they played in Chicago with Les Savy Fav and Smoke and Smoke. I was taken aback by their aesthetic aproach and at first thought they were going to be a novelty with them all looking like skinny french male models. Their music spoke for itself though. Their first album is incredibley raw and feels like it could fall apart at any moment. Recorded in 2 days, I loved the original album. The Sophomore release took just under 2 weeks and it shows. A higher production qaulity, less off-kilter guitars, a stronger backbeat, and extra back-up instruments like a brass ensemble to open up a beautiful acoustic intro into the second track that starts out with an epic drum beat, melodic double guitar part, and wailing vocals that repeat a great melodic hook. It turns around into a heavy-riffed dance song in the 3rd track. The first 3 tracks beg you to listen to the rest of the album and set a wonderful mood. They definitely try new sounds throughout (the song Pill Cake strikes a surprising liking to the band Cake with samba percussion beat and bass line), but they definitely hold true to their style and produce an artistic, eneregetic follow-up to their debut.
