  • Astounding.....but not always in a good way

As with many bands that push the envelope of their respective genre, White Whale is off the mark, more than once in WWI. Yet, their inaccuracy is made less troubling by other, more organic, experiments that come together beautifully. They seem to find and lose and rediscover their sound, but when they get it right, you know. Standouts include One Prayer, Fidget and Fudge, Whats an Ocean for?, and in particular, a song unlike almost anything out there, Admiral. By the way, the admiral in the song is named Admiral Yummyman, for what its worth.

solid debut. "What's An Ocean For?" was one of the best songs of 2006. Check out a nice outtake from these sessions on the OxBlood Records compilation, "First Blood".

a band that isn't afraid to try something original and new should be admired and apreciated. these guys got it right. I think this album will influence many bands to come. if this album is lost in time it would be a great loss. check it out.

One of my friends sent me "We're Just Temporary Ma'm," having stumbled across it... somewhere, I guess, and I was so in love with the song I put it on repeat and listened to it for a good hour solid. Then, having done that and become entirely entranced by it, I went in search of the rest of the album, and found it... lacking. I realize they are an experimental band, and that Temporary is a part of that experimentation, but I have to say, it's the only song of theirs that I like. Of course, I love it SO much that it makes up for the rest of the album's less-than-stellar-ness. I will say this though - White Whale's sound differs from song to song. No two of these are the same, from what I've heard, but I really hope they make more stuff like Temporary.
  • Modern Art

People go to art museums, especially ones that feature more modern and sometimes abstract art, to stretch their minds and excersize their imaginations. Most of the pieces seen are "interesting" or "provocative" but wouldn't really find a home in your living room. Seeing them once or twice is enough. WWI is a little like a sculpture which blows your mind for the way you have never seen anything quite like it BUT you want to take it home and put it on your coffee table. In short - an experimental type of sound that is extremely listenable! Buy IT!

... and making it at times, WW turn out to be a decent startup alternative band with no particular profile, but a variety of possibilities to choose from. What irritates is the overall pompousness, the obvious effort to be smart, witty, artistic - kinda like seminole's review (it's rHythmic, spelling bumblebee) - that ends up meaning nothing at all; but there's some potential here (the album, not seminole's review).
  • Not Run-Of-The-Mill

I bought the album after hearing a local review, (Lawrence, KS), and I was not disappointed. You can hear traces of Radiohead, Modest Mouse, Frank Black, Doves, The Decemberists, and the list could go on. Buy it if you like supporting groups that aren't your Simpson sisters, your Kelly Clarksons, or your other run-of-the-mill, formulaic pop radio stuff. I doubt you'd be disappointed.
  • With the uniformity of rythmic audiences, all doubts are ceased with White Whale.

With the uniformity of rythmic audiences, all doubts are ceased with White Whale. Let us not forget that music itself is the culmination of misunderstanding.
