This is a good song except for one fact that cannot, and further more should not, be overlooked. Hallelujah is one of those songs you just don't cover. I know it's a Leonard Bernstein composition, but Jeff Buckley's cover of this song is absolutely timeless. I'm dont like to talk bad about Brandi Carlile. She is incredibly talented, but this doesn't even come close to Jeff Buckley's rendition. I can't say I completely regret this purchase because I'm glad to support an artist of her calibre, but every time I start listening to this song have to change to Jeff's cover halfway through. I'd recommend getting some of her other work over this, unless you're dying to hear something that can't escape the shadow of another artist.

I'm not sure she has the best voice in America, but this song certainly stirs up emotions. It's wonderful!

Wow! Her voice can swing from rough and rugged to mystical and melodious all in the same breath! It's something to behold! It really is! Though I've purchased a lot of music from iTunes, I've never written a review before. But for this artist, this song... I had to.

K.D.Lang's rendition was much fuller and smoother!

This is one of the holy grails of cover songs and the bar is set very high. I love Brandi but i want to see her take a shot at something new. She's done Hallelujah and Creep covers which are pretty common among the singer songwriter set. Show us more of the face melting stuff from The Story.
  • great, but doesn't live up to the live show

I saw Brandi perform at the HOB in Anaheim a few years ago after her first album, and was blown away. Hallelujah is one of, if not my favorite song of all time. I am a huge LC fan! By the time I had heard her sing it live that night, I had downloaded/listened to probably 10+ different versions of the song, a few of the great ones mentioned in other reviews - though I'm not on the Buckley Band Wagon. Watching and hearing Brandi sing it live literally brought me to tears, and i still get goosebumps at the thought of that performance. I longed to have a recording of it, and when this came out I immediately bought it. This recording, though live, does not hold the power of one I saw. Maybe because she was recording for the radio and was afraid to go all out? I don't know. This is about 75% of what I saw at her show.... and this is still rendition is still in my top two or three.... so just imagine what it was like to hear her sing it like her life depended on it. Blows everything else out of the water. I met her after her set to purchase the album, and I told her just that... I had heard many many versions, but she had just taken it to another level. She said she liked Buckley's version, and through our short conversation it almost seemed as though she thought it was his song, not LC's, but I could have misunderstood. Anyway, I rattled off a few others that had sung it and she said she would give them a listen. But she will never be able to experience what the audience does when they watch her sing it live.
