  • A little slicker than his normal fare, but some real gems

Being a long-time fan of our story-telling, velvet-voiced friend, I admit I was somewhat taken aback by the more jaunty tone of this effort. But damned if it hasn't grown on me; to the point, in fact, where it's become one of my favorites. This is what happens when you have a hit record and get signed by a major record label- but that's not all bad- we get some insight into his true range. Beneath the more commercialized production is the same wry observation, authenticity, and passion. In the end, it holds up. Yellow Dog Song is a haunting take on people and their dreams. "The old dreams fill his head, when he lays down in his bed" --and then guitar refrain and then spoken-- "Sometimes that's all you got left." "Something to Believe In" has become quintessential Shawn- an underlying optimism amid the crushing weight of lives gone wrong. Likewise for "Santa Fe", a staple on his playlist. Yet he lightens it up with a playful verse ("He was riding with some hippies in a school bus; they had puttered here from Boulder covered in dust"). Mullins is a rewarding listen for those of us who love meaningful lyrics, delivered with authenticity and style.

Perhaps Somethin' To Believe In may be his signature song and probably my favorite. I have seen Shawn twice and he always plays this song. His music's so authentic and the song is really about not selling out or selling yourself short. Other songs that can be played over and over again are lighter but have power like Everywhere I Go. I like the ballad feel of North and the poetic sincerity of We Run. Sante Fe shows his conviction and range with some of the funniest, cracking lines you will hear. I didn't like I Know at first but the groove got me and I like it now. I got to pay respect where respect is due and this is a great album.

This album is really good! Some of the songs sound like they have a country twang to them. Some songs I recommend on this album are Time, Somethin' To Believe In, We Run, and Everywhere I Go.

I love all of Shawns work, but in my opinion this is one of his best all around albums. The songs are out of this world, easy to relate to. His voice is Music to my ears. I hope you buy all his works.
