Reviews

  • BEWARE—not the original Hogan's Heroes theme

If you happen to be looking for the theme to the TV series Hogan's Heroes, SKIP THIS COLLECTION. What you'll get here is a goofy imitation that misses the original's combination of quirky verve and rousing military spirit. IF YOU WANT THE ORIGINAL Hogan's Heroes theme, the performance by The Los Angeles Radio TV Symphony Orchestra appears to this reviewer to be the one heard with the TV show's first season. You can find that recording here on iTunes on the album "100 Ultimate TV Themes," VOLUME ONE. Several alternate versions of the Hogan's Heroes march are also on iTunes. A couple of them are performed with respectable spirit, and superior modern recording quality may make them of interest. Just avoid the version here!
  • The Ballad of Paladin - closest to what you hear on the show

A theme from a long time ago, in a frontier far, far away…. This song, and the series that inspired it: Have Gun - Will Travel are both (literally) before my time. Even though I never saw the show, “Paladin - The Man in Black” was always mentioned with an iconic timbre by my father. Appropriate that I recently discovered it on the Heroes & Icons network. The series debuted on September 14, 1957. It was during that first season that Johnny Western/Johnny Westerlund played a supporting character in one episode and co-wrote this song along with Boone & Sam Rolfe, as a “thank you” to Boone. Of the three versions of this song that are available on iTunes, this one is closest to what you hear during the closing credits of the show from Seasons 2 onward. Western’s voice is dominant in the mix, allowing the listener to focus on the lyrics. Are they great, profound, contemplative lyrics ? No - but they are perfect reverent nod to the show. Western’s guitar and other instruments are pushed back deep into the mix, which may be more appropriate since he played rhythm guitar - intended as a supporting foundation, not leading in the soundstage. This version also fades in/out - and the trumpet notes are absent.

These ARE the original songs. They just didn't have play the lyrics on television. But when albums were released, this is what they had! They are not imitations or remakes. Only Desi Arnaz could have sung the I Love Lucy theme. Besides, there IS an episode where he sings it, with the lyrics!

If you really want the themes as heard on the original shows, look elsewhere. Most of these are re-recordings done by groups other than the original artists. If all you care about is humming a tune you like, go ahead. But if you really want the authentic feel of the shows, this selection won't give it to you.

I love lucy rocks but the song isn't the version that he actually sang on the show. It's the theme song for the show Lucy did after I Love Lucy. But ya it's the original of that show but not the original of I Love Lucy....
