I love this score. Jason Robert Brown is a gifted artist with a heart-wrenching past. Don't believe me, buy "Last 5 Years" and find out for yourself. This score; man, this score can't lose. It's stunning! And if you have a girlfriend or boyfriend (I'm talking a friend here) who you lip-sync with, there are tons of options here. Now some will say, "what about 'Just One Step' and 'Surabuya Santa'..." and I say, yes, but, what about "I'd Give It All For You", "She Cries" and "Stars and the Moon". Those songs beat any hand!

Lavish, difficult arrangements beautifully performed by a wonderful cast. But the lyrics and melodies never really go anywhere and don't add up as a whole which is something that music theater writers should aspire too. Writing wise the content is completely bereft of creativity. Very generic in a very specific medium.
  • THE BEST Show I've seen in a while... It's perfect.

My High School recently did this show, and there's nothing bad I can say about it. At all. Sure, it's touching as a standalone audio, but if you think about these songs and their lyrics, I bet you'll find a deeper meaning. I DARE YOU to not find a song in this musical that you can't relate your own life to. Now, on to the actual review part. My favorites are the Opening Sequence (the Opener and On the Deck of a Spanish Sailing Ship), Just One Step (a hilarious one, if you imagine a large 40-year-old Italian woman), the River Won't Flow (I sang this one), She Cries (My life in a nutshell), Surabaya-Santa (just... wow.), King of the World and I'd Give it all for You (these two, right after each other, make me cry... especially since our tenor sang I'd Give it all for You), Flying Home (if you've ever lost a relative, this'll make you cry), and Hear My Song (Think of it as your future self talking to you in a troubled time, and it'll make you cry). Really, I have no favorites, I love them all. I will wholeheartedly recommend this show to anyone looking for something that you need to think about to get. This is an interesting show for the fact that it has no plot, yet tells a story all on its own. If you ever get a chance to see this musical, no matter where, SEE IT. Coming from someone who sang in it, I have not seen a better show out there, besides maybe a different Jason Robert Brown show (I'm looking for them, i haven't found one). But for now, Buy it. Now. Do it. Best 10 bucks you'll spend here, or pounds, or euros, "or whatevahhhh"<--(from Just One Step). ~Rob

One of the songs in this album was sung by the seniors at my high school involved in the theater program that I am in. It was truly magnificent and memorable to say the least.
  • Songs for a new world might just be my new favorite!

I just recently discovered Jason Robert Brown's amazing writing and composing style and this is without question the most magnificent piece of work I have come across in a long while. Major kudos to him and maybe I'll get to be in his next show...=) I recommend this to any new musical theatre lover who wants something with real artistic merit in its composition and in its performances.

"Songs for a New World" is an absolutely amazing show, with possibly the most beautiful music I've heard in quite a while. And that's saying something. Andrea Burns' and Brooks Ashmanskas' voices are simply gorgeous. That's not to say that Jessica Mulaskey's and Ty Taylor's voices aren't just as amazing, because they are. Personally, my absolute favorite songs are "Just One Step", "I'm Not Afraid of Anything" (I wanted to cry. It was just so beautiful.), "Stars and the Moon" (I know, it's overdone. But I love it.), "The Steam Train", "The World Was Dancing", "Surabaya-Santa" (The most hilarious song. Ever. Period.), "King of the World", "I'd Give It All for You" (Together, their voices are impeccable.), "The Flagmaker, 1775" (Again, I wanted to cry. So touching.), and "Flying Home". Therefore, of course, I recommend that you buy the entire album. Regardless of what music you typically listen to, this musical is touching and heartfelt and can move anyone to tears. Really, buy it. Now.

This album was mentioned to me by my choral director. After listening to Surabaya-Santa, I was blown away. These songs really span numerous different emotions, and are so enjoyable to perform!
