Rarely seen, this is one of the more oddly charming projects undertaken by Lurie. He and his guests, none of whom seem to be natural fishermen, set off to see what they might catch – fish rarely being the case. The real lure of the show (apologies for that) is the chemistry that burbles up inside the boat. A perfect example is the joyously goofy "River of Men", sung by Tom Waits to the rhythm of paddles. "Fishing With John" captures the unique personalities of Lurie and his friends, slowly propelling them through the unlikely waterways over which each episode plays out.
