shine is my favorite trey studio disc. it might even be(gasp), my favorite of all trey/phish studio albums. every song is great. hooks galore. it all works. pick it up on the phish website and get a free live e.p.(50 min).
  • His "best" was with Phish, he's working solo now.

Duh, of course Trey can be better, but he's working on his own solo works, with other musicians that don't share the goofy attitude Phish did. Therefore, he had to take his songwriting in a different direction, and still is. Hopefully those rumors about Phish reuniting are going to come true eventually. It's not that I don't like the Phish member's solo works, they're not Phish, but still incredible in their own way.
  • Not phish but still great

I am a huge phish fan. Me and my dad have several albums of theirs and are always talking about music. You have to remember, that IT IS NOT PHISH. This album is a 4.5 star album easy, but ill give him the benefit of the doubt and say 5 stars.

trey live when he was touring this album was insane. he jammed off of most songs for a while -- wherever you find it, tuesday, and of course, shine. the album isnt as sweet. but worth having.

As many of us, I really didnt like ths album at first. However, in retrospect, I believe this response was reactionary to the "non-phish" style which is what the purpose of the album is intended to be. Rather than holding Trey to what people know, reviews should focus on what the music achieves. Upon listening to Shine repeatedly, there are some great rifts and themes. While not a truly defining album, I think it reflects Trey's uncertainty about the music he creates. If you want to listen to phish then buy phish. Trey is another story as much of his solo work has been criticized. Instead, a true appreciation of music comes from not having expectations of a new phase in a arists career and appreciating all the variables that are expressed in the tunes. For example, is Sting's Lute album fantastic or pompous. Probably both. If you dont like it dont listen but dont criticize Trey for attempting to find a new direction.
  • A general introduction?

Most seasoned fans Anastasio's work would say this album doesn't quite live up to pretty much any of his past efforts. However it does serve as a good introduction for new found fans. "Shine" is alot like "Farmhouse" in that it breaks the ice in good ways. "Sleep Again" shows Trey finding a new sonic direction and portions of "Wherever You Find It" hints at those pleading Phish jams. If you're a fan of pretty straight foward music, you get it here. But as far as pushing the envelope..... ehmmm look elsewhere.
