Neil is direct and unapologetic. Like Rock and Roll when it works.

I love Neil Young and I agree with everything he says on this record but musically and vocally it's just to painful to listen to. He just sounds bad. And to think he even released it twice, wow. Most of his albums sound fantastic but this one and Fork in the Road just sound awful to me, limp guitars and droning whining vocals with barely any melody. Thank god he went on to do brilliant music again after this!

This album sounds like it was written in 9 days. Ironically, about the same time it took American soldiers to sweep Iraq and take Baghdad. Reactionary? Why not be proactive? The Middle East is on fire. The left is in power. Neil Young is silent...
  • Great Message, Alright Music

While I agree with the overall message of this album, I think that Young's best moments are his older heart wrenching acoustic songs. I was a little turned off by the music but absolutely loved the thoughts and ideas conveyed on this album. The song that had the biggest impact on me was "Families". It is exceptional lyrically and also very good musically. Again, the only critique I have of this album is Young's "metal folk protest music" sounds a little forced and repetitive at times. I would recommend this album to any diehard CSNY fan, but the casual fan might want to stick with the classics. If you really enjoy this album you should check out the movie CSNY Deja Vu.

Neil Young still sounds just like he did 35 or more years ago. Same nasally, anti-war music. I listened to him during two tours in Viet Nam and only the words have changed. Neil, you need to move forward. Find a new groove, dude.

Long time Neil fan with a Republican tilt towards the left. I don't agree with all of Neil's political views in this album, but the performance is one for the ages. Neil rocks with a clear concise view in a way that he hasn't since Ragged Glory. This is the Neil album we all hoped he had left in him, and Neil does not disappoint. Every song is great and the underlying chords riffs and melodies blend together in a precise fashion. Neil is at his best when the songs sound the same, as he aptly points out at the beginning of the Year Of The Horse double set. Living With War is a must buy for all Neil fans no matter your political views. I particularly love how he blends the bugle, Taps and other military themes into the songs.
  • An Important Thing For Every Artist To Do

I am not from the camp where people think that an artist should stay out of politics. Did we forget that this is where Neil and his friends (like CSN) came from? They were writing songs like this 30 years ago, and as many artists from that generation have faded out--Neil is not only making relevant music, but keeping his own legacy relevant in the process. Keep it up!

I feel this albums teaches younger people to speak their mind and opinion, through Neil speaking his, this isn't some attempt to make some money or show everyone how he can still write protest songs, it's made to teach these younger people today to voice their opinion. A very smart move on Neil Young's part I would say.
