Gigi’s voice is impeccable and I love it! In my opinion it’s a wonderful album with great vocals from one of the greatest Ethiopian vocalists of all times. The arrangement is a bit different from her previous and arguably best album, Gigi. Ambasale, Anten, Semena-Worck, and Marena-Wotetea are my personal favorites. I give this album a sold eight of out of ten!

While Gigi may raise concern for a number of traditional Ethiopians, in that her music fails to yield to complacent tradition, "Gold & Wax" is an absolute affirmation of Gigi's respect for her craft, and pride for her country. I hear some Fela.... I hear some LTJ Bukem.... I hear a lot of Laswell, of course. What's more critical, however, are how she feels. Her heart is out in the open... As our world grows ever smaller, many who traverse the forbidden lines of culture are reminded on a daily basis of how confined our world is also growing. I hear the sound of frustration amidst utter joy and pride. I hear a new sound, a new emotion for a new generation of Ethiopians progressing into the future, torn by such a rich past. While it seems a bit more vocal filled than other albums, it's none less than a progression of Gigi's talent, as she intends to speak her mind this go around... So many lyrics seem to infer dual meanings... left to the listener to take what they will. Have a listen.... put it down and try to cleanse your mind of what you think music is.... then pick it up... and fall in love. This is genuine. This is authentic. This is pure. Gigi breathes fresh air into an Ethiopia that so desperately wants to grow... to thrive.

Gigi has done it again! If you're reading this chances are you know Gigi's previous work, i.e. her self titled album, it's dub remix and the Abyssinia Infinite album. If you don't already own these, stop what you are doing and get them right now. You're denying yourself the work of the finest singer I've ever heard. Gold & Wax, Gigi's latest triumph, has renewed my captivation with this Ethiopian artist. Bill Laswell, her husband, is again at the helm as producer for this latest go around. This time he enlists the help of long time collaborators Buckethead, the Midival Punditz, Bernie Worrell and Nils Petter Molvaer to help the music along. Gigi writes all her own material, and fans of her work won't be left wanting at all. I've only had the album for two hours now and already I've listened to it twice. Her voice seems to have matured with age and I, for one, could not be happier! In short, buy this album. It'll be the best ten bucks you've ever spent. P.S. If she tours for this record, go out and see her live. It's unbelievable!
