Bought this album on vinyl when it first came out. It blew me away! The gravelly voice, the band and the stories told in the songs have stayed with me even today. Recorded live in front of a small audience, it gives a feel of where he was at in the late 70’s. Saw him in person at Southern Illinois University and he did not disappoint! At one point he picked up the local paper, The Daily Egyptian, and read/commented on some of the articles. Live music/theatre at its best. I highly recommend this album; it’s a snapshot in time of a truly gifted artist.

Never really heard much of Tom Waits except for his music in some movies. I was blown away by his classic Austin City Limits performance from the late ‘70’s. I found and bought most of the songs he did on that show from iTunes. Then I found this album. It was presented as a live night club act...but the audience was only friends and recording workers. Waits introduces The songs and told stories only as he can, making this album an experience unlike other albums. It love how his voice interacts with his style of jazz. I would recommend this as a Tom Waits starter album for those who are new to him.
