Being that Waits is like a Van Gough, Eienstein, Coltrane or Chomsky in his chosen Art - it would seem hard to have to pick a MASTERPIECE from his body of work ?? Nope, Mule Variations is it !

There are things which strike a chord with you and catch you out of the blue completely off guard and completely change your world view. Tom awaits is a man who has done that to me. I don’t have adequate language to convey the joy I receive from listening to this man. There are just too many approaches to try to review him in a meaning full way without losing my enormous train of thought he evokes. He is massive in his approach to music. Eclectic, original, heartfelt, fearless, and the rest. Just buy this album. It is one of my favorites of his and a good summery of his maturity come to fruition in music.
