For the Girls

I have no problem with recycling standards from the Great American Songbook but who says they have to always be sung against big band arrangments right out of the 1940s? I'm not saying these should be sung against technopop, but today's audiences are used to more sophisticated arrangments. The novelty, of course, is Kristin can actually sing so half of the "wow" factor is already built in. I give the album 2 stars but I'll add a bonus for the standout track "I Wanna Be Around," with the sustained finale. Awesome.

Her album is absolutely amazing. Saw her perform these songs opening night at the Nederlander Theater. She’s beyond talented. Her voice incredible! In love with this album.

I love the collaborations with other singers and though not all off the arrangements are great, Kristen’s voice, is a national treasure! I thank her for this endeavor and will be listening to much of it over and over again.

I usually don’t put reviews on here and I was sad that this is the first one I need to say some thing about. Let me start with I LOVE KRISTEN CHENOWETH! However the mixing and balance on the album is horrible. It’s like the vocals are fighting with the musical tracks for focus. In THE WAY WE WERE there is what I believe to be a rain effect that covers the entire second half of the song, a really loud orchestra and the Ms. Chenoweth’s vocals. My ears don’t know what to listen to. It would be great if they could make improvements and update the purchased recordings.

I’M A THEATER GIRL AND THIS MUSICAL IS GOOD

I like Chenoweth a lot, but the song selections and arrangements are atrocious. All of these songs have been done to death. And anyone who would dare cover “Desperado” has obviously never watched “Seinfeld.” 😋

My gosh this is horrendous. She needs to go back to whatever she did before trying to sing other people’s songs.

I love KC and have most of her albums. I think she has a fantastic voice and really knows how to sell a song. I understand that some people don't like her voice or style. Whatever. We all have our own tastes. I also love her acting chops and love a lot of stuff she's done. (Pushing Daisies is still a favorite) This album pays tribute to some great women of song. Starts off with Barbra Streisand's The Way We Were and then the fantastic duet with Ariana Grande in tribute to Leslie Gore (You Don't Own Me). It Doesn't Matter is a tribute to Eva Cassidy. I had to look her up. I may be listening to her stuff... she was good. I will Always Love You is a tribute to and a duet with Dolly Parton. Very cool. Also a big hit by Whitney Houston. What a Difference a Day Makes goes all the way back to Dinah Washington. When I Fall in Love was a hit by Doris Day, but also recorded by Karen Carpenter and I think Linda Rondstadt. She does a great version of Crazy in tribute to Patsy Cline. I enjoyed The Man That Got Away as her send off to Judy Garland. Then it is Peggy Lee's I'm A Woman that really soars with great help from Reba McIntyre and Jennifer Hudson. That one was fun. She includes Carole King's Will You Love Me Tomorrow and I Wanna Be Around from Edie Gorme. Desperado is a a tribute to Linda Rondstadt. Karen Carpenter also recorded that one. I mention her because she is my all time favorite female vocalist. So, I include her even if Kristin wasn't paying her tribute. This album fits in well with all her others that I play. Good listening.
