  • Okay, but why the reverb?

This collection is a little more thorough than the Alan Lomax prison songs collection (it has all the same tracks and then some) but whoever produced it felt the need to romanticize it all with a very noticable echo. Maybe they felt it sounded more haunting or something, I don't know. But it becomes annoying. The sheer power on certain songs like Black Woman or Levee Camp Holler kind of drift away. If you're into this kind of music, I reccommend the Alan Lomax collection of prison work songs, because the sound is unaltered. Those versions make you feel as if you're in the fields with the inmates, breaking stones alongside them
