The night before Bette Midler won her Tony Award ™ for "Best Lead Actress in a Musical", she wowed me for my very first time seeing "Hello, Dolly!". I couldn't believe the spectacular that was being put on before me! With such a classic score and music that will stay in your heart long after the show has ended. Listening to the soundtrack now, brings back that magic to me, wherever I am! This is a definite add to any Broadway music collection! Bette Midler shows us all again why she is the primo diva queen of Broadway!

I love Bette but this is not even close to being as good as the movie version. Feels stale and the orchestration is terribly dull. Better with Barbara!

No, no, no, no, no. This is most clearly, and exemplary of a studio recording with none of the feeling of a true stage performance. Yes, the voices are good, per se, but where is the vivacity? Carol Channing and her company's performances have been lauded, and then criticized and then lauded, and then diminished in the 25 years past during this age of STAGE SPECTACULAR, i.e. mechanical staging and electronically supported singeres. Listen to Carol's soliloquy at "As The Parade Passes By". This is not a star in recitative, this is the culminination of the character's own understanding of herself....and possibly life itself. There is a warmth and an understanding, that originally made this script an American classic. Let us love it for that, and take pride in this musical of all American musicals. BTW, internet trollers, I never said Carol Channing was a better singer than Ms. Bette. If you didn't get that, then you've already lost the intent of my comments.

Bette Midler is just divine, of course, and is not constrained by any other actress's interpretation of Dolly Levi. The orchestration is beautifully balanced and complimentary in every moment. You can feel the warmth between the orchestra and singers throughout. David Hyde Pierce's "Penny In My Pocket" is a superb example of musical comedy storytelling in song. And - oh my! - I was crying and sweating during "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" wondering if the ensemble could handle yet another step up as the song swells to its finale. Get this album. It doesn't disappoint.
